Real questions. Real clinical challenges. Practical answers.
Knowing the schema therapy model is one thing. Knowing how to apply it when you’re sitting with a client is another.
How do you decide which mode to work with first? What happens when a client’s vulnerability might actually be a coping response? And how do you turn a complex mode map into a treatment plan that gives both you and your client a clear direction?
These are the kinds of questions that come up regularly in clinical practice. They’re also the questions that therapists bring to our live Schema Therapy Mastery Plus+ Q&A webinars.
We’ve taken some of these discussions and turned them into a free, 16-page companion guidebook, bringing together practical clinical insights, examples and takeaways from Dr Rob Brockman.
Introducing Schema Therapy Mastery Plus+ Q&A Companion Guidebook 2
Our second guidebook brings together seven areas of schema therapy practice, with a particular focus on helping therapists move from understanding the model to applying it confidently.
The guidebook explores:
- Developing schema fluency: How to build a working knowledge of schemas and recognise them in real clinical presentations.
- Explaining schemas to clients: Using accessible language, including the idea of emotional themes, to help clients understand their experiences.
- Choosing which mode to target: Understanding when to work with coping modes, vulnerable child modes or a strong inner critic.
- Recognising pseudo-vulnerability: How to distinguish genuine vulnerability from coping responses and use empathic confrontation effectively.
- Interpreting assessments: Understanding the limitations of schema questionnaires and using them alongside clinical formulation.
- Working with complex trauma: Considering readiness, emotional safety and the timing of experiential interventions.
- Treatment planning: A practical five-stage framework for identifying treatment objectives and adapting them as therapy progresses.
Each chapter is organised around questions raised in the webinars, with Dr Brockman’s responses edited into an accessible reference, including clinical pearls and practical takeaways.
From memorising schemas to recognising them in your clients
One of the questions explored in the guidebook is something many therapists encounter when learning schema therapy:
How can I memorise and get my head around all the schemas?
Dr Brockman’s recommendation is to develop schema fluency by connecting each schema to a real person or clinical example.
For instance, rather than simply remembering the definition of Abandonment, consider how it might present in someone who becomes anxious when their partner leaves for work, or when their therapist takes a holiday.
By connecting theoretical knowledge with recognisable human experiences, therapists can gradually build a more intuitive understanding of the schema model.
The guidebook explores this approach in more detail, including how to distinguish schemas from the coping responses that develop around them.
A bonus practical exercise: The Schema Fluency Task
We’ve also included a practical worksheet to help you apply this learning.
The Schema Fluency Exercise, included as an appendix, invites therapists to work through all 18 schemas and connect each one with examples from clinical practice or everyday life.
For each schema, you’ll consider developmental experiences, present-day triggers, associated emotions, thoughts and memories.
It’s a useful exercise for therapists who are still learning the model, as well as experienced practitioners who want to strengthen their formulation skills.
A resource you can return to in clinical practice
One of the benefits of our Schema Therapy Mastery Plus+ Q&A sessions is the opportunity to explore the challenges that don’t always have straightforward textbook answers.
The guidebook captures these discussions in a format you can revisit, whether you’re reflecting on a difficult session, preparing for supervision or considering your next treatment objective.
It’s not a verbatim webinar transcript. The discussions have been edited and organised into an educational resource designed to make the clinical insights easier to find and apply.
This is the second guidebook in our companion series, offering a sample of the practical learning available through Schema Therapy Mastery Plus+.
