What Do We Do When a Client Has “No Memories”?

What Do We Do When a Client Has “No Memories”?

Most Schema Therapists will eventually encounter a client who struggles to recall parts of their childhood.

Sometimes the client simply has a poor autobiographical memory. In other cases, they may describe something more striking:

“I have almost no memories before the age of nine.”

How should we understand this clinically? And can Schema Therapy still progress when the early memories we would usually explore are unavailable?

Start with curiosity, not assumptions

Significant gaps in childhood memory are not proof that trauma occurred. They should, however, invite careful clinical curiosity.

The first step is to clarify what the client means by having “no memories.” Is their recollection generally vague, or is there a complete absence of memories from a particular developmental period?

Memory gaps can sometimes be associated with dissociation or early adverse experiences. Forgetting may also have developed as a coping response. The therapist does not need to immediately determine why the memories are absent or attempt to retrieve them.

Work with the memories that are available

An absence of early memories does not prevent Schema Therapy from moving forward.

When a client can recall experiences from adolescence or later childhood, therapy can begin there. The therapist can work with emotionally significant events that remain accessible and gradually move backwards through the client’s developmental history.

As emotional safety develops and later experiences are processed, earlier memories may begin to emerge naturally. Trying to force recollection is rarely helpful and may shift attention away from the client’s present emotional needs.

A useful principle is:

The aim is not to recover memories. The aim is to heal the emotional experience.

Recovered memories may sometimes emerge during successful therapy, but they are not the objective of treatment.

Questions that arise in real Schema Therapy practice

This is one of several important clinical questions explored in our new Schema Therapy Mastery Plus+ Q&A Webinar Companion Guidebook.

The guidebook brings together memorable moments from our live Q&A sessions and organises them into a practical reference that therapists can revisit in their clinical work. It is not a transcript. The discussions have been edited and grouped into six themes covering assessment, modes, trauma, telehealth, diagnosis and clinical formulation.

Other questions explored include:

  • How do coping modes influence the way clients complete the Young Schema Questionnaire?
  • Can Imagery Rescripting and Chair Work be used effectively through telehealth?
  • How do we understand complex combinations of schemas?
  • Can Schema Therapy principles still be useful in very brief appointments?
  • When should we work primarily with modes, and when is a simpler schema formulation enough?
  • How should questionnaire results be integrated with developmental history, behaviour and the therapeutic relationship?

The discussions include practical responses, clinical examples, key takeaways and short “Clinical Pearls” designed to support reflection and application beyond the original webinar.

Live Q&A access with Chris Hayes and Rob Brockman is included as part of Schema Mastery Plus+. Members can bring forward the questions that emerge in their own clinical practice and learn from the questions raised by therapists working across different settings and client presentations.

To give you a sense of these discussions, we have created a sample Schema Q&A Guidebook featuring selected questions and answers from a recent session.
