When Closeness Becomes Enmeshment

When Closeness Becomes Enmeshment

“I don’t know where my stuff stops and your stuff starts.”

Chris shares this phrase from a former supervisee in Episode 71 of the Hayes & Brockman podcast, and it captures something central to the Enmeshment schema.

Being close to other people is usually a good thing. Strong attachment, connection and support are important parts of healthy relationships. The difficulty comes when that closeness begins to blur a person’s sense of where they end and someone else begins.

In this episode, Chris and Rob explore how enmeshment can develop, how it can affect identity and relationships, and how Schema Therapy can help.

What can enmeshment look like?

Enmeshment does not always look dramatic.

It can show up as difficulty knowing what you want independently of another person, feeling responsible for someone else’s emotions, or struggling to separate your own needs and opinions from theirs.

Rob suggests that one particularly practical sign can be difficulty making decisions independently. Even relatively ordinary choices may become hard without reassurance, agreement or input from someone the person is closely connected to.

Chris also brings in a familiar example from popular culture: the mother-son relationship in the second season of The White Lotus, where a mother attends her son’s honeymoon. It offers a useful way to think about how closeness can cross into blurred boundaries and interfere with a person’s ability to establish independence within other important relationships.

When does closeness become a problem?

One of the questions Chris and Rob explore is where healthy attachment ends and enmeshment begins.

Closeness itself is not the problem. In many cultures, strong family bonds, interdependence and collective decision-making are normal and healthy.

The question is whether that closeness starts to interfere with a person’s ability to develop and maintain a clear sense of self.

This might include difficulty functioning independently, uncertainty about personal values or preferences, or feeling unable to tolerate disagreement or emotional separation from someone important.

Culture matters

The episode also considers why enmeshment needs to be understood within a cultural context.

What appears overly close or dependent in one culture may be entirely appropriate in another. Family structures, expectations around independence and ideas about personal identity can vary significantly.

For clinicians, this means looking beyond whether a relationship appears unusually close and considering whether the pattern is causing distress or limiting the person’s functioning.

Treating the Enmeshment schema

Chris and Rob discuss how Schema Therapy can help people identify where their own needs, emotions and preferences may have become overly intertwined with someone else’s.

Treatment may involve developing a stronger sense of identity, recognising personal wants and values, becoming more comfortable making independent decisions, and building relationships that allow space for both connection and individuality.

The aim is to help people maintain meaningful closeness while still having a clear sense of themselves.
